Kickstarter Blitz #48

It’s the end of my fourth year of doing these Kickstarter Blitzes.  I was going to change up the format a bit, but there’s not really that much out there this month that really excites me.  As a result, I think I’ll hold back that official format change until next month.  Just as a note, I am writing this about a week in advance of publication so I don’t have to be putting it together while on vacation, so some of the information may have changed.

Mythic Arcana (Tony Go, Tau Leader) is a game of summoning deities to build the most powerful pantheon.  From the Kickstarter description:

The Apocalypse. Götterdämmerung. Ragnarök. It goes by many names, but in the end there are only ashes. The heavens have fallen and in their wake a void beckons to be filled. Mythic Arcana is an epic card and dice game about the creation of a new pantheon from the remains of shattered ones. Choose your gods wisely and use them to battle the opposition. Only one pantheon can reign supreme.

There’s dice rolling, card drafting, special abilities, and some cool looking art.  It looks like a good, if fairly light, game.  It does seem a little overpriced for a 70 card, 12 dice game (though to be fair, the cards are large and tarot sized).

Dice Wars (Zach Roth, Brybelly) is a tactical battleground game with dice.  From the Kickstarter description:

In this fantasy tactics game of war, players expertly maneuver randomly-generated armies across an ever-changing hex-grid battlefield to outwit, outplay, and outlast their opponents. Roll your units, discover synergies on the fly, then deploy merciless combos to command your forces to victory!

You have seven polyhedral dice to represent your army, and you’re moving around a map to try to eliminate your opponents.  Looks like a lot of work has gone into the detail of this game, so check it out if you’re into that kind of thing.

Mainland (Martin Morrisette) is a world forming tile-laying game with clans fighting for control.  From the Kickstarter description:

A new world is forming in total chaos. Hostilities between clans are now open and battles seem inevitable. As the leader of your clan, your mission is to conquer territories and expand a powerful Mainland. This is the only way to secure the future of your people.

You’re playing square cards that must overlap both a card already in play as well as empty space.  Items that overlap must match.  At the end of the game, you want a large mainland to score you a lot of points.  It seems like an interesting game.

Tank Chess (Predrag Lazovic/Dragan Lazovic, Forsage Games) modernizes the theme of chess while reimagining some of the mechanisms.  From the Kickstarter description:

Tank Chess is a strategic game played on 16×16 or 20×20 square board which as a main objective has the destruction of the opponent’s Command Tank or a sneaky escape of your own Command Tank. The way to achieve this is by meticulously planning and executing the maneuvers of the rest of your forces composed of Light, Medium and Heavy Tanks, Tank Destroyers and Heavy Mortars.

You get a modular setup, with obstacles that can be placed around the board.  You get a larger board to play around with.  And you get tanks, which means you get long range shots. It looks pretty good to me.

Chronicle X (Glenn Allan, Archon Studio) is YAKMG (Yet Another Kickstarter Miniatures Game), this one set in a sci-fi world.  From the Kickstarter description:

Chronicle X is a 1-7 player tactical board game, set in a Sci-Fi Retro 1980s, tasking players to either control the daring men and women that make up the military organization, Chronicle X, or the Overmind, a ruthless and cunning alien overseeing the invasion of Earth and the end of all human resistance. The Chronicle X player(s) have a diverse group of heroes to choose from to form their squad, but must also manage the expansion of their base of operations, using what scraps and materials they can to secure a foothold on the planet. The Overmind player has a cadre of alien troops to choose from to overwhelm the Chronicle X players, ensuring they will never save Earth.

At a certain point, all of these games with superb miniatures really blend together for me.  And yet they all tend to do quite well – this one has raised over $300K at the time of this writing.  I haven’t looked too deep into it because I’m not that interested in this type of game, but it does look pretty.

Movable Type (Robin David, Uncanny Cardboard) is getting a second edition after the first was released in 2016.  From the Kickstarter description:

Movable Type mixes the feel of classic word games with modern game mechanics – think of it as Scrabble mixed with Sushi Go! With a variety of card-drafting styles and an unusual victory mechanic, the winner won’t necessarily be the player with simply the best vocabulary – all players are in the running until the final word is played!

You draft a hand of five cards, then use them plus three common cards to make the best word you can.  After 4 rounds, you use the cards you have scored plus three more common cards to try to make the winning word.  It seems like there’s a little poker in there – seems like a cool take on word games.

Postcard Dungeons (Joseph Limbaugh, Modest Games) is just that – a dungeon on a postcard.  From the BGG description:

The game simulates a series of dungeon crawls in search of treasure. Players represent the leaders of various adventuring guilds who choose from one of 3 dungeons that have increasing levels of challenge. They then roll 3D6 to populate the dungeon. After the dungeon is set up, they roll another 3D6 to determine the strength of their party which is made up of a Thief, a Warrior and a Wizard. They choose which die goes to which hero and play progresses between the dungeon taking a turn against the player and the player taking a turn against the dungeon.

There’s not a lot to tell about the game – just a description and some preliminary art.  But I think the idea sounds cool.

ESTIMATED DELIVERY:

HOW MUCH?
$4 ($6 if you want expansions)

And that’s it.  I’ll see you again in 2018!  Thanks for reading!
